T20 Cup final hero Josh Buckingham is to lead Hook & Newnham Basics in Southern Premier League Division 1 this summer.
The 28-year old batsman/wicketkeeper, who hit the Hook Army to a shock T20 Cup final victory over South Wilts at the tail end of last season, succeeds Matt Love, who has taken by a teaching appointment in London, but hopes to continue playing for the North Hampshire. Hook's season opener is at Calmore Sports on May 4.
Buckingham, who joined the Hook set as a seven-year old, smashed a match winning 84 off 40 balls in last year’s T20 final under the Ageas Bowl floodlights.
It set Hook up for a place in this season’s ECB T20 competition and an away day in Surrey next August.
A PE teacher at Crestwood School, Eastleigh, Josh has twice battled back after knee surgery in recent seasons. He is one of four current playing members of the cricketing Buckingham family which has a long association with Hook & Newnham Basics. Younger brother Matt is a middle-order batsman (who plundered 80 in the 2018 Guy Jewell Cup final). Uncles Graham and Simon are significant players in the club’s Hampshire League teams.
Kevin Light continues to skipper Hook’s County Division 1 side, while Vinny Gardner (now effectively the club’s Director of Cricket) will take charge of the thirds and Tony Robson the 4th XI.
