Teenage Bashley (Rydal) left-arm pace bowler Bradley Currie is proving a hot prospect on the national Under-17 cricket circuit.
He gave his prospects of a future England Under-19 call up a significant boost with a six-wicket return in the ECB Under-17 Super 4s tournament currently at Loughborough, writes Mike Vimpany.
Currie, 17, took 6-33 for the EDP South & West against London & East, knocking over the first three opposition batsmen and then the last three, including top scorer Feroze Khushi (64).
Hampshire Academy spin all-rounder Felix Organ skippered the South & West (234) and top scored with 70 before taking 1-33 off his ten overs.
London & East were dismissed for 221, leaving the South & West winners by 13 runs.
The six-wicket salvo by the former Poole Grammar School quick climaxed a remarkable past week and a bit for Currie, who helped has his adopted Surrey YCs celebrate a prestigious ECB Under-17 County Championship and 50-over Cup double.
The left-armer, who has played regularly for Dorset this summer, took a tidy 1-16 off 12 overs in Surrey’s thumping 260-run victory over Lancashire in the three-day U17 County final at Arundel.
A few days later, he wrecked Durham’s top order, with three early wickets in a 3-34 return, which set up an eventual Surrey victory in the Under-17 50-over Cup final at Kibworth.
Currie, who was awarded a sports scholarship to Millfield last autumn and is studying French, accounting and economics at the Somerset public school, shone through the various Dorset junior age groups and is eyeing a Surrey Academy contract.
“Everything is happening so quickly and things are going so well, so you can imagine how much I’m enjoying it all,” he smiled.
“I’ve played a lot of cricket, done a lot of bowling and really need to ensure I stay injury free and don’t over-do things.
“I’ve got South & West games again today SAT and tomorrow, so am missing Bashley’s match at South Wilts, but plan to play in the final game at St Cross Symondians next week.
“My short time at Bashley has been really enjoyable and I’m glad I made the switch. It’s been a big learning curve and they are a great bunch to play with.”
The Premier League season may end next weekend, but Currie won’t be able to put his boots away for the winter for a week or two yet.
“Millfield are in a national schools U17 cup semi-final next week and hopefully a final against either Sedburgh or Shrewsbury after that, so I’ve got plenty to look forward to – after which is back to the text books and the A-level studies !”
