Dan Wimble blasted five sixes and ten fours in a blistering 93 as Fareham & Crofton successfully chased down Hythe & Dibden’s 235-7 to win by seven wickets and give their prospects of Southern Premier League Division 3 survival a significant boost.
It was Fareham’s four win in the past six matches and lifted them out of the danger zone, albeit only ten points ahead of Portsmouth & Southsea, whom they beat during their recent fine run.
But the omens didn’t look that good for the Bath Lane visitors when Tom Gates (82) and Zac Millar (70) shared a 116-run stand and eventually point Hythe to a handy 235-7.
That didn’t stop Wimble, who unleashed a boundary barrage on the Waterside bowlers as sixes and fours flew off his bat around the compact Jones lane ground.
Wimble shared consecutive 80-run plus partnerships with James Heiniger (32) and teenage left-hander Viraat Sahu, whose unbeaten 58 contained three maximums and five fours.
Fareham waltzed home with eight overs to spare.
But Tom Kent’s side know the club’s survival mission is far from over as P & S also keep winning – leaders Bashley (Rydal) feeling the full effects of a 52-run defeat the BCG as the Southsea side tightened the whole scenario at the foot of the table.
Jack Davies hit 100 (two sixes and 11 fours) and shared a marvelous 181-run launch with Matt Benfield (77) as Portsmouth & Southsea piled up an impressive 284 (Jake Peach 41).
Despite their lofty status, it was all too much for Bashley, who made a creditable 232 in response, with Patrick Lewis hitting 70.
It was Bashley’s second defeat in three outings, one which has loosened their grip at the top, where their lead has been cut to 28 points.
Those results – third placed Hambledon and strugglers Trojans had their matches postponed – didn’t go unnoticed at Holbury, where Fawley closed the gap and planted Purbrook in the bottom four with a five-wicket win.
Similarly, with table topping Bashley (Rydal) II and relegation battlers Portsmouth & Southsea left on the menu, Trojans themselves are in trouble.
Josh McCoy’s 59 stood out in Purbrook’s 187-9 (Bailey Parratt 4-27), while Jon Lush (64) led the way as Fawley, aided by Kieron Earl (30) and Sufian Munir (31), cruised home with time to spare.
So, that’s left the for the teams batting to avoid dropping into the Hampshire League next season alongside relegated Lymington II ?
