Local recreational club cricket has been saddened by the recent death of prominent Winchester & District stalwart and umpire Dave Kirk, aged 81.
Mr Kirk was a major contributor to recreational cricket in Hampshire, invariably stepping up and volunteering his services in the interest of cricket, including helping to develop juniors at both Chandlers Ford and the Winchester Warriors.
He was a leading figure in umpire and scorer training, organised the appointment of match officials, besides taking on a myriad of Committee roles – always fully committing himself and using his quiet and wise counsel to get everyone to pull together in the wider interest. He was a ‘do-er’ rather than an office holder and went about his business in a modest and self-effacing manner.
Dave loved cricket, qualifying both as a cricket umpire and a scorer, and later becoming a registered umpire instructor.
He was at various times Secretary, Acting Chairman, Training Officer and President of the Winchester & District Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers (W&DACU&S), responsible for the appointment of match officials to much of outdoor and indoor cricket around Winchester.
Dave was awarded the Association Badge and Bill Cleeve Memorial Award by the Winchester & District Cricket Clubs Association and, in recognition of his significant, sustained and exemplary contribution to both the Association and to local cricket, Honorary Life Membership by the W&DACU&S.
Dave was also an influential member of the South Coast Panel of Umpires & Scorers (‘the Panel’), officiating in the Southern Premier and Hampshire Leagues, County Age Group and district cricket, and much else.
Inevitably, he became Secretary of the Panel, and later Chairman and Secretary, providing support and guidance for his fellow umpires and scorers. His contribution to the Panel was recognised by its award of Honorary Life Membership.
In recognition of his outstanding long-term service to recreational cricket, Dave was awarded the 2010 ‘Behind the Scenes’ Shepherd-Frindall Award by the ECBACO.
Dave will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, as a teacher, a mentor and friend.
The funeral service will be held at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Bubb Lane, West End, SO30 2HL on Thursday (February 22) at 11.30am and afterwards at the Ageas Bowl.
