Fareham & Crofton and Portsmouth & Southsea put their respective and immediate Southern Premier League Division 3 futures on the line in tomorrow’s final round of matches.
Fareham host newly crowned champions Bashley (Rydal) II – the match at Bath Lane starts at the earlier time of 11.30 – with a slender four-point advantage over P & S, who must wipe out that deficit and more when they climb Portsdown Hill to face Purbrook.
Having bowled hosts Tichborne Park out for 96 – former Petersfield colt Ben Anscombe took 5-9 – it was inconceivable Fareham could lose, but lose they did, being skittled themselves for a meagre 88, Will Allam taking 6-29.
Like Fareham, Portsmouth & Southsea had been showing encouraging form of late, but they too slipped up – a 41 run home defeat by Trojans easing the Stoneham visitors to victory.
Trojans centred their 188-9 around Nigel le Bas (74) and Abdul Manjra (49), while P & S were chugging along okay while Oli Kanavan (25) was at the crease, only for Jack Longman (4-33) to send five wickets crashing for 14 runs. P & S never recovered and were 148 all out.
It promises to be a nervy afternoon at Bath lane and Purbrook Heath …
