Josh Digby notched his first ECB Southern Premier Division fifty in four seasons as Bashley (Rydal) continued a positive title defence with a comfortable four-wicket win over Lymington at the BCG.
It was their second win of a rain ravaged start to the season, one which would have been more emphatic but for some sloppy batting as Lymington’s 183-run total came into sight.
Despite losing the toss, Lymington, aided by some spills in the field, made a good start, with openers Terry Crabb (28) and the forceful Ben Rogers (35) putting on 68 for the first wicket before Digby (2-23) struck twice in quick succession.
Lymington lost four wickets for nine runs - Mitch Wilson (4-39) proved particularly difficult to handle – and sank from a promising 68-0 to 77-4, with South African Ximus du Plooy trapped leg before for six.
Henry Edwards (16) and the patient Dan Cox (33) steadied the ship, but Lymington were finally all out in the 44th over, Rhodes Franklin (2-24), fresh from his switch from Hook & Newnham Basics, and Jacob Gordon (2-29) shared the remaining four wickets.
Bashley openers Josh Digby (50) and the emerging Jacob Gordon (48) put on 97 before Josh Proctor had the former Clayesmore School all-rounder [Jacob] caught behind by keeper Luke Mortimore.
Michael Porter (25) then shared a partnership of 41 runs with Josh Digby, whose two-hour stint at the crease made Bashley’s run chase fairly straight-forward. It was his first SPL 50 since facing Lymington in June 2018.
At 153-2 it looked a walk in the park for Bashley, but as the finish line grew closer so the 2019 Premier champions took their eye off the ball and lost four wickets – three of them to James Wade (3-38) – for 24 runs before they got across the line with ten overs to spare. Pictures Terry Nash.
