St Cross Symondians can wipe out South Wilts’ 15-point lead at the top if they complete the double over the defending ECB Southern Premier Division champions at the Green Jackets Ground tomorrow, 11am.
They won by five wickets at Bemerton on the opening day of the season, with left-hand all-rounder Charlie Gwynn announcing his arrival on the Premier Division scene with a match winning 63 not out.
The Winchester club have yet to announce their side – probably waiting to see if Hampshire are prepared to release Felix Organ ahead of Monday’s County Championship match with Warwickshire at the Ageas Bowl – but know that South African all-rounder Michael Booth will not be playing.
The Durham University quick, who has been playing for Warwickshire IIs, is due to undergo surgery on a groin injury next week and could miss the next six games.
Australian seam bowler Michael Beer is in good form with five-wicket returns in each of his last three matches. He was 20 for the season.
Apart from James Hayward, South Wilts will be at full strength, with skipper Ben Draper returning, after rather embarrassingly being stranded in Northern Italy when scheduled Friday return flight from Venice was cancelled.
Draper had been in Venice for a Shakespearian Experience and missed not only South Wilts’ seven wicket win at Burridge, but also Wiltshire’s NCCA Championship victory over Shropshire. Fortunately, team-mate Tom Morton had his kit in the car boot and scored 150 not out !
St Cross Symondians: Ellis, T Foyle, Foster, Trussler, Gwynn, Organ, H Foyle, Connolly, Beetham, Haworth, Beer.
South Wilts: Draper, Morton, Spearman, Rowe, Godsal, Falconer, Sen, Grant, Croom, Lewis, Burton.
While St Cross Symondians and South Wilts scrap out the leadership contest, there’s a titanic showdown at the bottom, where Hook & Newnham Basics host Bournemouth at the KGV.
With a mere five points separating the pair, it’s a match neither side can afford to lose.
Harry Robson will be high up on the Hook batting grid after attending the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend.
Hook & Newnham Basics: Thane, Buckingham M, Buckingham J, Simpson, Watts, Divechi, Willcock, Warner, Neville, May O, Robson.
The Hampshire Academy are unchanged at Havant, where teen tailenders Oli Cordery and Ethan Martin will hope for a less frenetic batting experience than when the sides met at the Ageas Bowl in May 7.
Defending 176, Havant were on the brink of celebrating a day one victory when they reduced the Academy to 79-7 – after which Cordery (32*) and Martin (78*) produced an amazing last wicket stand to win the game for the county hopefuls.
Havant: Hopson, Whitfield, Walker, Stone, H Gadd, Metzger, Hindley, Jerry, F Gadd, M Hayward, D Ransley.
Academy: Eckland, Cheater, Mumford, Wright, Kelly, Fortesque-Jackson, Fairfax-Ross, Pritchard, Martin, Jack, Cordery.
Northants all-rounder Gareth Berg is absent from the Lymington team for the New Forest derby with Bashley (Rydal) – which will come as some relief to visiting skipper Josh Digby, who misses several front line batsmen, Tom Friend and Michael Porter among them.
Teenage opener Will Tripcony has been picked for debut for Dorset in Sunday’s NCCA Championship match at Wimborne & Colehill. Patrick Lewis is back behind the stumps.
Lymington: Crabb, Moors, Wheble, Scott, Royan, Rogers, Attree, K Dariwal, Freeman, Cox, Hartshorn.
Bashley (Rydal): Francis, Digby, Tripcony, Saif, Morris, Goodey, Lewis, Trodd, G. Wilson, Fletcher, Huns.
Sam Beer returns sore footed from the Varsity Match for Cambridge University and will share the Totton & Eling new ball at Burridge with fit again speedster Tom Varney
Totton & Eling: Sam Bracey, James Taylor, Joe Bracey, Bothwell Chapungu, Tom Varney, Sam Beer, Fletcha Middleton, Jaidel Richardson, Ethan Taylor, Toby Green, Bright Mugochi.
