Hampshire lost by one run to Glamorgan in a dramatic last ball finish to a thrilling ECB Second XI Trophy T20 final at Arundel Castle.
Set a competitive 123 to win, Hampshire were on the brink of victory (at 120-7) when Ian Holland (58) drilled Roman Walker’s penultimate ball to extra-cover.
It left Lymington’s Gareth Schreuder with the unenviable task of scoring three runs off the last ball, which he was only able to hit for a single to deep mid-on.
The 19-year old wicketkeeper/batsman, who finished with 15 not out, had just previously added a precious 24 with Holland, who earlier lifted Hampshire from an uncertain 42-4, sharing an innings rescuing partnership with Tom Scriven.
In the end, Billy Root’s unbeaten 47 at the tail end of the Glamorgan innings proved crucial.
Earlier, Hampshire beat Durham by five wickets in the semi-final, Scriven (25) and Ollie Soames (23) sharing the decisive stand after the side had stumbled to 53-5 chasing 93.
Sixteen year old Ben Glendinning (remember the name !) took all five Hampshire wickets at a personal cost of 13 runs.
James Fuller took 4-9 and 3-23 in the two matches.
Semi-final
Durham 93 (Weighell 27, Fuller 4-9, Holland 2-14) Hampshire 97-5 (Scriven 25*, Soames 23*, Glendinning 5-13). Hampshire won by five wickets.
Final
Glamorgan 122-7 (Root 47*, Brown 17, Fuller 3-23) Hampshire 121-8 (Holland 58, Scriven 17, Schreuder 15*, Walker 3-17, Szymanski 2-30). Glamorgan won by one run.
