Hampshire Academy wicketkeeper Charlie Mumford snapped up EIGHT catches behind the stumps on the opening day of the county’s Under-18 match against Surrey at the LSE Ground, New Malden, where a staggering 38 wickets fell for 509 runs before the YCs recovered to snatch a narrow victory.
Mumford, who represented the South & West at last week’s ECB Supa 4’s tournament at Loughborough University, had a field day keeping to seamers Max Simpson and Harry Petrie, who took eight of the wickets at Surrey were dismissed for 109 in response to Hampshire’s 156 all out.
The Bedford School sixth former bagged the first four catches as Surrey lurched to 18-4 and then gloved four of the last six wickets to fall, George Ealham (eldest teenager son of the former Kent & England all-rounder) keeping Surrey’s innings alive with a defiant half-century.
Having led by 47 on first innings, Hampshire were promptly skittled for 98 second time around, but then reduced Surrey – needing 146 to win – to 84-8, Petrie (match figures 6-52) and Simpson (8-52) sharing six of the wickets.
But Surrey’s ninth-wicket pair produced an unbroken 62-run partnership to turn the tide of a rather bizarre three-day match, one that certainly won’t be remembered by the batsmen !
Hampshire 156 (Khanna 34, Eckland 31, Broderick 28) and 98 (Barker 24, Majid 5-18) Surrey 109 (G Ealham 51, Simpson 5-20, Petrie 3-28) and 146-8 (Barnwell 40*, T Ealham 28*), Petrie 3-24, Simpson 3-32). Surrey YCs won by two wickets.
