'Calmore Sports are top of British Gas Southern League Division 1 – but there’s no way they’ll be getting ahead of themselves, according to skipper Mark Lavelle, left.
Taking a seven-point lead over Basingsoke & North Hants into today’s tricky visit to Sarisbury Athletic has come as a bit of a surprise, even though Calmore remain on a high after last season’s SPL2 title triumph.
“Our pre-season target was to try and win two games a month with an eye on staying up, so to be top after six weeks is well and above our expectations. I think we are fully deserving of our place up there,” Lavelle said.
“We have just delivered as a team in all our wins, every week it is a different person stepping up with bat and/or the ball.
“We have no superstars in our team, I like to think we have good balance throughout and all work hard together, there aren’t expectations on individuals to deliver week in week out.”
Lavelle believes Calmore’s experience of playing Division 1 cricket in 2015 – when they were ultimately relegated – has helped this summer’s success.
“It was a tough season in 2015 but we found out a lot about ourselves and took that into last year's title win and it's carried on from there.
“Our team spirit is great and we have a good squad to choose from. Winning becomes a habit and it's something we have carried on from last year.
“As great as it is to be top of the league we won't get ahead of ourselves : our main goal for the season is to maintain our Division 1 status, so we cannot afford to get complacent. “When we get to the half way stage we will see where we are at and assess from there but right now it is a great feeling to be top !”
