Fifteen year old Matt Falconer is certainly underlining his versatility as an all-rounder as South Wilts seconds gradually claw their way out of relegation trouble in Southern Premier Division 2.
Seven days after taking 5-18 in South Wilts’ dramatic win over high riding Old Tauntonians & Romsey, Falconer displayed his talents again – this time with the bat, scoring a maiden SPL fifty as the Bemerton side sent Hartley Wintney crashing to a 79-run defeat and almost off the top of the table.
Falconer’s opening partnership of 141 with Joe Cranch (77) provided a perfect launch pad from which South Wilts were able to post 251-8 and effectively bat a sun weary Hartley Wintney out of the game.
The pair both fell to the spin of Angus Brown (3-52) before George Edwards (42) and Tom Pearce (21) pushed on. Dan Reynaldo took 3-59, dismissing both batsmen.
Grilled under the Salisbury sun, Hartley lost three wickets for eight runs – Nick Partridge and Jayden Atkinson doing the damage - and later crashed to 55-6 before late order contributions from Charlie Puttifant (30), Ed Philpott (38) and Jamie Teale (43) gave their eventual 172-9 an air of respectability.
Tom Lewis weighed in with a 3-12 return for South Wilts, who are now 28 points clear of the drop zone.
