Arno Hattingh announced his arrival on the Southern Premier League scene with an unbeaten century as Division 3 leaders Bashley (Rydal) cemented their place at the top with a 35-run win over promoted strugglers Fareham & Crofton at the BCG.
It was only Hattingh’s second SPL match. Due to registration technicalities, the South African has been restricted to playing Hampshire League cricket and last season won Bashley’s third team batting award.
He made up for lost time against Fareham, scoring a six and 13 fours in an unbeaten 100, sharing a century stand with teenager Patrick Lewis (52) as Bashley posted 266-6 (James Turner 38).
James Heiniger (56) and Sam Stoddard (32) took Fareham’s reply to 89-1, whereupon a middle-order collapse led to them slipping to 148-6 before three-wicket Blake Barnwell (44) and Ben White (33) revived their fortunes to 231-8.
