Andy Parratt has spent his sporting life on Southampton Waterside, so it was appropriate the Fawley veteran should be the Hampshire Seniors’ home town hero in the ECB 50-plus County Championship victory over Sussex at Holbury.
Parratt, left, hit an undefeated 77 as Hampshire successfully chased down a Sussex total of 181-5 to win by five wickets with seven balls to spare.
The victory has put Hampshire through to the quarter-final and an away day in South Wales on August 22.
Charlie Forward (31) and Andy Giles (20) provided Hampshire with a 61-run start, but former Warwickshire County Championship winner Michael Bell (2-19) and Gavin Sutherland (2-29) triggered a collapse which saw three wickets tumble for seven runs and a fourth at 89-4.
Cue Parratt, who had been at Holbury since early light helping get the ground fit, and Stu Shapland (30) to turn the match on its head with a near century stand which eased Hampshire to the brink of victory.
Parratt hit two sixes and seven fours in his match winning 77 not out.
Earlier, the Sussex total had been based around a fifth-wicket partnership between by Preston Nomads’ Gary Robinson (47) and Stirlands’ Gary Hunt (33), who lifted the visitors from 68-4.
Hampshire spin pair Shapland (2-19) and Matt Thankachan (0-24) conceded only 43 runs off their combined 18 overs, while Bramshaw all-rounder Zane De Monte took 2-44, in addition to a breath-taking catch off Pete Hayward (2-44).
• Hampshire’s Sixties Championship Vase quarter-final tie against Norfolk on Tuesday has been called off due to a waterlogged Hursley Park pitch.
