Former Southern Premier League cricketer Ryan Burl, left, gave his prospects of a Zimbabwe Boxing Day Test debut a significant boost with a battling half-century before the tourists lost by five wickets to a South Africa Invitation XI in Paarl.
He hit a patient second innings 51 off 138 balls (six fours), sharing an eighth wicket stand of 97 with Chamu Chibhabha (55 off 110 balls, 5 fours and a six) as Zimbabwe’s last three wickets added 123 runs and set the SA XI a target of 153, which they reached five wickets down.
The 23-year old left-hand all-rounder, who has played SPL cricket for South Wilts and Sarisbury Athletic in recent seasons, scored 26 in Zimbabwe’s first innings and must have a great chance of making his Test debut in the one-off four-day DN match against South Africa at Port Elizabeth, starting on Boxing Day. He has previously played in nine ODIs.
Scores: Zimbabwe 196 and 243. SA Invitation XI 287 and 154-4.
