A fraction of a point separates Calmore Sports and their near neighbours Totton & Eling at the Southern Premier Division 1 summit after 12 rounds of matches.
The pair both enjoyed emphatic wins, with Calmore flexing their muscles for Sunday’s victorious Voneus Village Cup quarter-final tie against Rockingham, and Totton & Eling winning comfortably at Sparsholt.
A double lbw strike by Solent University seamer Yannik de Mezieres Lepervanche (2-27), which tented Portsmouth openers Ben Duggan and James Christian gave Calmore the early impetus at St Helen’s, where only Will Smitherman (37) and Hemanshu Hirani (24) managed to make double figures in a disappointing 138 all out.
Emerging spin talent Liam Carty (2-18) (pictured above by Les Chase) bowled a eye catching eight-over spell, unaware that his famed father Adam was playing a star role for Calmore seconds, scoring 63 and taking 5-43 with his left-arm spin.
Andy Marston (3-24) made subsequent inroads, but a near century stand between wicket-taking Ben Johns (57 not out) and Shaun Johnson (50) swept Calmore to a seven-wicket victory with eight overs to spare.
Although Harrison Clarke top scored with 61, spin all-rounder Brighton Mugochi played the lead role in Totton’s easier than expected 108-run win at Locks Lane.
He made 35 and later took 6-33 as Sparsholt collapsed to 80 all out (Stuart Taylor 40) in response to T & E’s 188 all out.
