Havant bowed out of the ECB National Club T20, losing by 14 runs to Wimbledon – but put up a creditable performance against the powerful Surrey Championship club.
Last year’s Southern Premier League T20 winners bowled and fielded well at Beckenham, pulling Wimbledon back from 69-4, but were unable to shift Matthew Spriegel (29).
The former Northants and Surrey cricketer held their innings together, losing five partners before making way for a critical 27-run ninth-wicket stand, which hoisted the Wimbledon score to a respectable 125, left-arm spinner Steve Matthews taking 3-24.
Despite a flying start when Stu Ransley (20) took 14 runs off Spriegel’s opening over, Havant collapsed from 45-2 (Josh McCoy 22), losing five wickets for 30 runs before a valiant effort by Chris Morgan (26) took their final score to 111, 14 runs adrift.
Wimbledon went on to defeat Tunbridge Wells in the group final and qualify for the last eight.
