Mike Swain has been become the first recipient of the Geoff Owen Memorial Trophy, awarded to the Hampshire Seniors’ Cricketer of the Year.
He scored in excess of 1,500 runs playing for the England 70’s ‘Test’ side and Hampshire Over-60s and 70s this season.
It was fitting that Swain should become the inaugural winner because he and Owen, who died from cancer just before the start of the season, were long standing team-mates in the Hampshire 60s side and played against each other on many occasions in the old Southern League. They both played for England at 70s level.
A former Gosport Borough left-hander, Swain helped Hampshire’s Golden Oldies win the National Seventies Cup, scoring 989 runs in competitive matches, including five centuries and six scores of 50 or more.
He played three times for England, helping them win the ‘Ashes’ by scoring 223 runs. Swain also made 345 runs for Hampshire Over-60s this summer.
