Asad Abbas produced a league best spell of 6-11 as Fair Oak gave their British Gas Southern League Division 3 survival hopes a significant boost with a nine-wicket of mauling of Gosport Borough at Lapstone Park.
The seasoned Oaks all-rounder ripped out six of Gosport’s top eight as the visitors, having reached 48 without loss, lost all ten wickets for 30 runs and crumbled to a dismal 78 all out.
They fell apart once Abbas, often a destructive batsman, bowled skipper Tom Larner (31).
Gosport’s Jacob Harris (16) and Oli Creal (14) formed the youngest-ever SPL new ball partnership and conjured up the wicket of Charlie Gwynne second ball.
But Tom Hockenhull (38) and Ed Kemp (32) ensured no further scares to provide Fair Oak with a much needed win, which lifted them 11 points away from the relegation zone.
Hursley Park’s fading prospects of remaining in the SPL will probably hinge on the outcome of this Saturday’s relegation showdown with Fawley at Holbury.
A thumping eight-wicket defeat by Purbrook has left Hursley 26 points adrift at the bottom – a situation that will become untenable if they lose to Fawley, who are hovering on the brink of the drop zone.
Teenager Luke Deacon (64) top scored as Hursley made 144-9 against Purbrook, who rattled off the target with Clark Harding (54) and Aaron Dean (47) at the crease.
Alton II, in second from bottom place, were rescued by the rain as Waterloville had them 45-4 when the match at the Jubilee Ground was abandoned.
