Lymington seconds must beat Southern Premier League Division 3 champions Fair Oak at Sparsholt’s Locks Lane ground on Saturday to avoid an immediate return to Hampshire League cricket in 2019.
They were promoted as County Division 1 runners-up last season, but a one-wicket defeat in the Privett Park basement battle against Gosport has left them in the second relegation spot, eight points adrift of the Borough.
Lymington are still wondering how they continually blew their chances of beating Gosport, having had the Borough on the canvas three times in the closing stages.
They appeared in a handy place after Isle of Wight teens Ben Attrill (68) and Ross Whyte (35) guided them to 200-6.
When Gosport sank to 113-7 (Andy Woodward 4-35) it appeared all over bar the proverbial shouting.
But Charlie Pennicott’s unbeaten 77 sparked a remarkable comeback as Gosport’s tail added 91 runs – the winning runs coming off the fourth ball of the last over.
Gosport’s final match is at Hambledon.
