Mark Toogood made an instant impact on his Gosport Borough debut in the battle of the Southern Premier League Division 2/3 East cup strugglers.
Entering the Privett Park clash, neither Gosport or Purbook had tasted an SPL victory so far.
And thanks to Toogood, it was the Borough who broke their duck with a 26-run success, writes Simon Carter.
The former Royal Navy and United Services all-rounder rescued the innings after Jordan Price (4-46) had dismissed the Borough top three. He saw off openers Lee Harrop (8) and Ollie Creal (7) before clean bowling Jacob Harris through the fence for a single to leave Gosport 25-3.  It was 44-4 when Charlie Creal (9) was dismissed by James Gurney.
But Toogood, batting at No 5, struck seven fours and a six and top scored with 43 as the hosts slowly recovered.  Charlie Pennicott (33) helped Toogood add 59 for the fifth wicket before the latter was trapped leg before by Josh McCoy (3-33).
Teenage tailender Jack Richards hit 27 as Gosport closed on 193-9 - a total swelled by 41 extras, including a startling 28 wides!  Those extras were to prove decisive in the final reckoning.
McCoy led from the front in Purbrook’s reply, top scoring with 69 off 72 balls, including 13 boundaries.
Opener John Moller (36) helped his skipper take the score to 90-1, but shortly after it was 105-5 after the middle order of Wayne Musselwhite (0), James Barber (1) and Alan Mengham (0) had been blown away.
Completing a fine all-round display, off-spinner Richards [pictured] dismissed Moller, Musselwhite and Barber to finish with 3-28 off eight overs.
The key wicket arrived at 147-6 when McCoy was out caught and bowled by Charlie Creal (3-21 off seven overs).  Only Jack Taylor (18) reached double figures after that as Purbrook were dismissed for 167.
