The funeral of Ventnor cricket groundsman Graham ‘Stumpy’ Cotton will take place on Friday 22 May, 1545 at the Crematorium in Whippingham, East Cowes, with the wake at Steephill.
Graham, who died suddenly in late April, was born on the Island and lived in Niton when young. He has one son, Ventnor third team captain Ali Cotton. He was 73 when he died Thursday evening, April 30 the previous day having taken a day off from Steephill work to go and visit London.
He had supported VCC for many years, even when working in Bath, and he was a driver by trade: coaches, lorries and buses at different times. He had previously played football for Ventnor FC and was known locally to so many people.
He returned to Ventnor and became groundsman when Rev Nigel Cox retired, tending Steephill with the off Island support of Ali (who is groundsman at Lords Wandsworth College, Odiham). He had had ill health and heart bypass some years ago and was looking forward to spending another summer at Steephill, his spiritual home.
