Scott Baldwin struck a superb 97 as Hartley Wintney successfully chased down Andover’s 323-9 to win by one wicket with five balls to spare – and so keep alive their hopes of avoiding relegation from Southern Premier League Division 1.
It was the second week running a Hartley Wintney side had knocked off a 300-plus target on the historic Cricket Green, Steeple Langford’s 364-5 having been overhauled in a Hampshire League match the previous Saturday.
The result of the round 14 SPL1 match was particularly harsh on Lions debutant Max Romer-Lee, left, who hit a career-best 145 – only to finish on the losing side. He enjoyed a century sixth-wicket stand with Matt Hooper (35).
Dan Reynaldo (3-66) and Scott Baldwin (3-48) shared six of the Andover wickets for Hartley, who got away to a solid 74-run start through Jonny (34) and sibling brother Will Kerr (64), who went on to share a century stand with Baldwin and move the score on to 184-2 when the opener became the first of two Hooper victims.
Baldwin added another 59 with James Beckwith (37), who moved the score to 243-5. But when the New Zealander was ninth out at 304, caught off Charlie Ayers (2-58), Hartley still had more to do – a task Aussie Ben Earney (14) and Reynaldo fulfilled with five balls to spare.
The win left Hartley Wintney 43 points adrift of third from bottom OTs & Romsey, whom they visit in a critical relegation showdown at Romsey on Saturday. HW still have Village Cup finalists Liphook & Ripsley, Calmore Sports and Ventnor to play after that.
