Teenage Hampshire all-rounder Tom Scriven has been named in a 15-man England U19 squad for next month's ICC World Cup tournament in New Zealand.
He clinched selection with a series of fine performances in England’s recent tri-Nation tournament in Potchefstroom, where he followed up an unbeaten 88 against Namibia with 53 in the final against South Africa.
Scriven, who hails from Newbury and was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford, has been with the Hampshire Academy for the past four years and debuted for the county’s Under-15 side.
He was a member of the Hampshire team which lifted the ECB Under-17 title in 2015, but really came to the fore the following summer by hitting a massive 288 in the Under-17 County Championship match against Devon at Sandford.
He hit another century against Somerset - knocks that alerted England Under-19 selectors.
“I suppose it was that knock in Devon that really kick-started things for me and to play for England was always my ambition after that,” Scriven said.
“I produced some decent performances in South Africa, whom we beat twice before losing to them in the final.
“It’s going to be a busy Christmas for me preparing for New Zealand, but it’s a great platform for me and a wonderful opportunity.”
Scriven, who will join the Ageas Bowl playing staff on a full-time basis next summer, flies to New Zealand early in the new year and will hope to play in both the warm-up matches against Ireland and Sri Lanka.
England then play World Cup group matches against Namibia, Bangladesh and Canada.
Alongside Scriven, the squad includes four players from Middlesex, three from Somerset, and two each from Glamorgan and Worcestershire.
Winchester-raised Felix Organ, who played for England Under-19s against India last summer but who experienced a disappointing tri-nations series, has not made the World Cup party.
Full England squad: Harry Brook (Yorkshire, captain), Ethan Bamber (Middlesex), Liam Banks (Warwickshire), Tom Banton (Somerset, wk), Jack Davies (Middlesex, wk), Adam Finch (Worcestershire), Luke Hollman (Middlesex), Will Jacks (Surrey), Tom Lammonby (Somerset), Dillon Pennington (Worcestershire), Savin Perera (Middlesex), Prem Sisodiya (Glamorgan), Tom Scriven (Hampshire), Fin Trenouth (Somerset), Roman Walker (Glamorgan).
“The players have shown with their performances in the Tri-Series in South Africa over the last couple of weeks that they can travel with plenty of optimism,” said Under-19 selector David Graveney.
“This is an exciting opportunity for them, and for the rest of the squad – to travel to New Zealand, and to test themselves against the outstanding players from other countries in this age group.”
