Hampshire Academy pulled off a thrilling penultimate ball victory over their Kent counterparts in yesterday’s T20 at Winchester College and then held their nerve to win the second of the Under-18 double headers by five runs.
Despite Charlie Mumford’s 45 at the top of the innings, Hampshire were second favourites at 93-6 chasing Kent’s 144-6.
But James Trodd (32) and James Eckland (26) turned the match in the last five overs, sharing an unbroken 52-run partnership as Hampshire snatched victory off the penultimate ball.
Hampshire then narrowly defended 146-7 in the second match as Kent responded with 141-4, leg spinner Kamran Khanna repeating his tidy two-wicket spell from the opening game.
Kent 144-6 (Gordon 48, Turner 29, Petrie 3-24, Khanna 2-20) Hampshire 145-6 (Mumford 45, Trodd 32*, Eckland 28*). Hampshire won by four wickets.
Hampshire 146-7 (Barker 37, Fontaine-Jackson 31, Eckland 26) Kent 141-4 (Taylor 54, Khanna 2-16). Hampshire won by five runs.
Hampshire face Somerset in another T20 double header at Bashley (Rydal) on Thursday, with the matches starting at 11 and 2.40pm.
