The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal received an unexpected £140 boost when the Hampshire Cricket League imposed a levy/fine on anyone attending last Friday’s presentation awards dinner and not wearing a poppy in their lapel.
League chairman Denis Emery said: "The function was on Armistice Day, so it was very appropriate for everyone to wear a poppy.
“But all those who came up to receive an award put their hand in their pocket and made a donation.
“We had a lot of fun and were delighted to be supporting such a worthy cause.”
