Hampshire Academy captain Joe Weatherley, 19, flies to Adelaide today to spend the winter with the Woodville District Grade Club, where he will play alongside left-arm spin all-rounder Tom Andrews, who made such an impact at Bashley (Rydal) this season.
Weatherley, who skippered England Under-19s in Australia last winter, will train with the West End Redbacks (the South Australia State squad) at the Adelaide Oval. He will be under the supervision of Tim Nielsen, the former Australia head coach.
“I’m really looking forward to the trip. It’s a great opportunity to develop my game and hopefully enable me to try and break into the Hampshire first team over the next few years,” he said.
“It’s far better than being stuck indoors during gym and net practice for a whole winter.
“Playing Grade cricket in Australia is every aspiring player’s dream and all being well I’ll fly home in March ready to hit the ground running with our pre-season trip to Barbados.”
Andrews, meanwhile, has recently made his full debut for South Australia.
