Skipper Keith Harsham led from the front with bat and ball as Hampshire remained unbeaten and top of their ECB 50-plus County Championship west group with a 46-run win over Cornwall at Sparsholt.
The veteran Basingstoke & North Hants all-rounder top scored with 62 before ripping out the Cornwall middle-order with a 4-25 return.
An unspectacular opening saw Hampshire on 57-3 after 15 overs with key batters Andy Giles (12), Fawley debutant Andy Parratt (8) and Stu Shapland (15) back in the pavilion.
Keith Harsham, fresh from helping England 60s to a “grey” Ashes series win over Australia, set about rebuilding the innings with Andy Worth (32) taking the total to 124 before the Sparsholt chairman was bowled.
Matt Thankachan (26) then joined the fray, blitzing the Cornish attack as Hampshire regained control before Harsham (62) holed out. The Seniors were 186-6 with 8 overs remaining. Useful contributions from Andre Manders (22) & Neill Sutherland (16) enabled Hampshire to close on 223.
Rowledge prospect Tim Wheatley quickly made inroads into the Cornish line up, dismissing both openers before Jon Nance and Anton Luiten frustrated the Hampshire attack. Progress was slow with only 67 on the board after 25 overs before they upped the tempo.
Champagne moment
Luiten looked as though he would make the Seniors pay when Thankachan spilled a straightforward catch early on off the bowling of Shapland. However, having put on 99, the tide turned when skipper Nick Gargaro had Nance (36) caught by Giles at deep long on and the same pair combined to run out Luiten (62) soon after. The run out by the sprightly Basingstoke outfielder was unquestionably the Brian Johnson Champagne Moment.
The Seniors then dominated with Harsham (4-25) producing a fine spell as wickets fell steadily. Only skipper Paul Clements (28) offered much resistance before falling to Shapland. Wheatley (3-21) mopped up to give the Seniors a relatively comfortable victory.
Hampshire next take on the Isle of Wight at Hook & Newnham Basics’ KG V Ground on Wednesday (10 July) before travelling to Trowbridge to face Wiltshire for their final Group fixture on Tuesday July 16.
