Hampshire’s youngsters will have to be content with a bridesmaid’s tag in this season’s ECB Under-17 County competitions, being runners-up in the 50-over Cup and beaten semi-finalists in the three-day County Championships.
They hoped to wipe away the disappointment of losing to Northants in the Cup final by qualifying for the upcoming County Championships finals at Arundel Castle – but, having waltzed their way through the west group, were beaten by Surrey in the 3-day semi-finals.
The toss proved all important at Totton & Eling’s Southern Gardens, where Hampshire were rushed out for 90 and then dismissed again for 169 after Surrey had posted 207.
Fletcha Middleton (55) and Harry Broderick (42) top scored for Hampshire, but Surrey, needing only 53 to win in their second innings, cruised home by eight wickets to tee up an Arundel gig against Cheshire on Tuesday week, August 27.
Left-armer Sean Hunt, who at 6'5" projects an intimidating presence to and from the crease, returned match figures of 10-85 for Surrey.
