Jake Goodwin cracked a superb 80 to lead Hampshire Under-17s through a pre-lunch crisis and to a four-wicket win over Wales – a result which has secured a second ECB competition semi-final slot for the Ageas Bowl youngsters.
Goodwin produced his match winning innings after Hampshire had slumped to 136-5 chasing down a Wales total of 261 in the ECB two-day County Championship match at May’s Bounty, Basingstoke.
It earlier looked as though Hampshire might stroll to victory after Billy Mead (54) and Elijah Samuel (48) shared a century opening partnership.
But then five wickets fell in the second session before Goodwin and Harry Came, who finished with an unbeaten 50, shared a 111-run stand to take Hampshire to the brink of victory.
It was the second time in three days Hampshire had beaten Wales – their initial 24-run win, inspired by an unbeaten 94 by Harry Hovey, earning the side a place in the ECB 50-over Cup semi-finals.
They are drawn away to Surrey with the tie at Reed’s School, Cobham, on Sunday week, August 16.
Details are awaited of Hampshire’s Under-17 County Championship semi-final.
