The prospects of Hampshire Seniors finishing top of the National Over-60s County Championship West group will hinge on the outcome of their meet-up with Somerset at Hursley Park on Tuesday, 1pm.
If Hampshire can beat last year’s national 60s champions, they will almost certainly top the six-county group, which they currently lead on the strength of back-to-back wins over Wiltshire and Wales.
Local lolly-pop man Iain Britton (82), pictured, and Mike Swain (53) swept Hampshire past winless Wiltshire’s 141-9 and to a ten-wicket win.
The five-wicket win over Wales, often a bogey side, was trickier, but an unbroken 71-run stand between Jon Floyd (39) and Chris Yates (36) eased Hampshire home with 16 balls to spare.
Earlier, Terry Morton (35), Keith Harsham (27), Britton (26) and Swain (24) played their part in Hampshire chasing down a Welsh total of 221-5.
Prospects are not so bright for Hampshire’s 50s side who are struggling to qualify for the national phase of their vets competition.
Despite a century by Chris Wheeler (103), they lost by 38 runs to 2016 ECB 50-plus finalists, Dorset for whom Tim Cowley produced an inspired performance.
The younger brother of former Hampshire off-spinner and now first class umpire Nigel Cowley, Tim hit 53 before ripping the heart out of the Hampshire batting with figures of 5-53.
Jim Ryall (87) and ex-Essex captain Paul Pritchard (58) top scored in Dorset’s 263-9. Hampshire made 235 all out.
