Cross Symondians captain Tom Foyle has lavished praise on teenage centurion Harry Came, who blazed an unbeaten 112 to sweep the Winchester side to a thrilling four-wicket penultimate ball Southern Premier Division win over South Wilts.
“Harry’s hundred against South Wilts was the best that I have seen on the Green Jackets cricket ground in the 12 years I have played at the club.
“It was a mature, well planned and highly skilled innings, which was finished off with a glorious straight six into the church field to win the game in the last over.”
Came’s six-hit off a bemused James Hibberd enabled St Cross to successfully chase down the third highest 50-over Premier Division total of 283-8. Ironically, it was Came’s second hundred of the season against South Wilts, following his 106 in the Time pennant match at Bemerton in June.
Jack Mynott (84) top scored for South Wilts and teenage duo Will Wade (59) and Ben Draper (58) hitting fifties Tom Cowley (45) had set the pace at the start.
Dutch all-rounder Logan Van Beek’s 67 gave St Cross a perfect springboard, but it was while Came and Billy Mead (59) were together that the Winchester side really stepped on the gas.
Mead’s polished half-century came to an end when a mix-up (at 204-3) led to him being run out by Wade.
It left Came with massive responsibility to rebuilt the chase – something he did with panache, totally dominating late on and scoring probably 62 of the last 80 St Cross needed. He plundered 14 off Hibberd’s last over.
The win left St Cross in a satisfactory final fifth spot, with South Wilts (leaders at the start of the penultimate round of matches) dropping to third behind Bashley (Rydal).
