Mark Lavelle took five Hartley Wintney wickets for only four runs as Calmore Sports cruised to a comfortable win to boost dressing room confidence ahead of Saturday’s top table Southern Premier League Division 1 showdown with Bournemouth at Chapel Gate.
The Calmore skipper (left, Echo picture) ripped through the lower Hartley order as the winless North Hampshire side were dismissed for 134 and eventually beaten by five wickets.
Hartley Wintney probably knew it wasn’t going to be their day when young Australian opening bowler Ben Earney suffered facial injuries in the pre-match warm up and took no further part.
They lost two early wickets before Danny Plume (45), Jamie Teale (25) and Matt Kerr (22) gave their innings some substance. But Plume and Teale perished in quick succession, leaving the door, open for Lavelle to cut through the tail.
Michael Cook (42) eased Calmore to 62 without loss before Ben Hyde (3-24) created the inroads that had only academic
Bournemouth, who enjoy a ten-point lead at the top, had an equally comfortable 119-run victory over Hook & Newnham Basics, who are falling away after a bright four-win start.
Martin Miller (54) and Nick Park (49) set a 102-run platform for Bournemouth, who overcame a middle-order stumble with Jake Hurley smacking 44 off 29 deliveries, including six fours and a maximum.
Hook never looked like troubling the visitors’ 263-7 after Bournemouth started menacingly with the ball, leaving the hosts reeling at 44-3.
Openers Dave Kidner (1-27) and Hurley (2-31) set the tone before left-arm spinners Dom Clutterbuck (3-34) and Rob Pack (3-33) tore through the middle and lower order to leave Hook 144 all out (Matt Love 40).
“It was nearly the complete performance,” said Bournemouth skipper Chris Park.
“The batsmen did their job – despite having a little wobble in the middle overs again – but we managed to recover.
“Jake Hurley and George Wilson accelerated brilliantly in the final six overs to set up a really good score on what was turning out to be a difficult pitch to bat on.
“Early wickets were crucial with the ball. Dave Kidner and Jake did really well to get three in the first 10 overs – that helped Rob and Dom do what they do best in bowling tightly and getting wickets as well.”
Josh Hill hit an unbeaten 70 and shared a match winning stand of 80 with Jordan Wright as Sarisbury Athletic recovered to beat Andover by four wickets at Allotment.
Things looked dicey when the Division 1 promotion chasers dipped to 132-6 (Tom Nightingale 33) chasing Andover’s 209.
But Hill and Wright (36 not out) turned the match in Sarisbury’s favour and ensured they remained joint second in the log alongside Calmore Sports. Hill finished it off with a straight six.
Earlier, Hampshire’s Asher Hart (74) and Will Arnold (53) added 105 to lift Andover from 28-3 to a competitive total.
OTs & Romsey lost half their wickets for 81 runs in pursuit of Portsmouth’s 207 and were beaten by 19 runs on Southsea seafront.
But they remain 15 points ahead of the city club in the immediate Division One danger zone.
Australian Fraser Hay (54), who has played for Hampshire seconds for the past two seasons, took Portsmouth to 94-1, a total Jack Marston (39) and Asad Abbas (39) improved despite regular intrusions by the five-pronged OTR spin attack.
Ideally, OTs needed one of their top five to make a fifty-plus score, but only Elliott-Mitchell-Lee (38) came close.
Stuart Tognarelli hit 47, but by then the asking rate had increased and Reuben McArdle (4-40) and Andrew Marston (3-28) were dictating the terms. OTs were 188 all out.
