Hartley Wintney will be donning their all-red t20 kit in Saturday’s Southern Premier League Cup group match against Hambledon on the Cricket Green, 12.30 – in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation.
The 40-over East Division 2 game will be played using white balls and features two of Hampshire’s oldest clubs, Hambledon having been founded in c1750 and Hartley Wintney some 20 years later.
Following the huge success of Lord’s turning red last year, The Ruth Strauss Foundation is calling on players and clubs to help turn cricket red again while watching The Ruth Strauss Foundation Test - England v West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford, 24-28 July.
Ashes winning England captain Andrew Strauss set all cricket clubs across the country a challenge to paint their club Red (not literally) on Saturday.
Hartley Wintney secretary Andrew Ross explained: “This is becoming a new annual event run by Andrew Strauss in memory of his late wife to raise money for the Ruth Strauss Foundation, supporting breast cancer victims.
Keeping switches
“In a nut-shell we’re asking everyone to turn up around the Green to watch the game in a red top, simple as that. Hambledon are delighted to get involved.
“During the innings break we are hoping to get a "socially distanced" group photo in front of the pavilion with everyone - players and those watching - and send it to the Foundation to show our support of this great event.”
It will be Hartley Wintney’s first SLC match, while Hambledon plan to build on last weekend’s comprehensive 92-run win over Gosport Borough in which Norwegian prospect Henry Glanfield scored an unbeaten 112 before taking 4-27.
Will Kerr captains the HW side, but hands over the wicket-keeping gauntlets to Hugo Hammond so as concentrate on his batting.
Hambledon give a debut to teenage off-spinner Jack Pearce, grandson of the Bognor Regis Town soccer legend, but wicket-keeper Will Bond is unavailable.
Hartley Wintney: W Kerr, A Brown, J Kerr, H Hammond, S Baldwin, J Mulvey, W Ross, J Teale, A Parson, M Teale, D Reynaldo.
Hambledon: Spencer Le Clercq, George Marshall, Henry Glanfield, Chris Pratt, Indy Chakrabarti, Simon Barnard, Ollie Willoughby, Rory Morris, Mark Butcher, Jack Pearce, Shahryar Khan.
