Hartley Wintney have pulled off a coup by signing former New Zealand Under-19 all-rounder Henry Collier for the upcoming British Gas Southern Premier League Division 2 campaign, which begins at Sparsholt in two month’s time.
A 22-year old left-handed top order batsman and front line right arm off-spinner from Manawatu situated on New Zealand’s lower North Island, Collier played for 2015 ECB Middlesex County Premier League champions Hampstead last season and was the club’s leading wicket taker and second highest run scorer.
His 438-run tally for Hampstead included fifty-plus scores against Ealing, Eastcote and Twickenham, while he celebrated two ‘five-fer’ returns in his 27-wicket haul.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Studies degree and will give his time to helping the club’s Junior Development group sessions on Friday evenings, as well as supporting the coaches of other age groups.
“Henry is an extremely talented cricketer and Hartley Wintney feel his signing represents a real statement as to our intentions on the field of play, having regrouped as a club and playing unit in the last 18 months with the purpose to regain our place, and compete strongly at the highest level possible in the Southern Premier League structure,” said Director of Cricket Jonty Rowe.
Hartley Wintney, who sailed far too close to a second consecutive relegation last season finishing only ten points ahead of demoted Bashley (Rydal) II, are optimistic of a better summer this time around.
Danny Plume, who won the Premier Division 2 batting award with 582 runs last summer, will again skipper the side.
He said: “Henry has bought into the club’s ethos and firm belief that we want promotion this year and to get back to playing Division 1 cricket.
“His knowledge and experience of playing cricket at such a high-level will be a massive bonus to the squad and will help us hugely towards achieving that goal.
“He will also be a great asset to the club and the junior section and we are looking forward to him joining us next month.
