James Hayward smashed a blistering 61-ball unbeaten century as South Wilts opened their pre-season programme with a hefty 122-run win over Thames Valley League side Falkland.
He arrived at the crease with South Wilts already going well on the strength of starts by Jack Mynott (40), Eddie Abel (37) and Ian Holland (31).
In typical Hayward style, boundaries came in plentiful supply, with the Berkshire side unable to set a field to his array of ‘reverse stick’ hockey shots.
With Ben Draper hitting an unbeaten 44, and Hayward exactly 100 before retiring, South Wilts powered to 283-4 off 45 overs.
Mynott (3-29), Hayward (2-10) and former Academy seamer Ryan Murray (2-12) took seven of the nine wickets to fall as Falkland replied with 171-9.
Miles Kantolinna (68) and Tom Cowley (57) carried South Wilts II to a nine-wicket win over Falkland II (138) at Bemerton.
Left-hander Ben Johns hit a gallant 73 but was unable to spare Calmore Sports a 50-run defeat against a South Wilts XI at Bemerton.
Joe Cranch (69), Marc Burton (46) and Rob Pittman (40) guided SW to 238/7, while Matt Burton (4/26) and Alec Lloyd (3/21) shared the bowling spoils as Calmore were dismissed for 178.
David Griffiths, the former Hampshire and Kent place bowler, is Basingstoke & North Hants’ player coach.
He went wicketless as Guildford posted 233-7 at May’s Bounty, but then featured in a half-century last-wicket stand top scored as the Bountymen, having collapsed to 81-9, replied with 132 all out. Griffiths made 35 before Guildford secured a 101-run win.
Roles were reversed in the second team fixture between the clubs, where Keith Harsham (71), Andy Giles (45), Chris Jolley (42) and Callum Coombs (30) steered BNH to 235-7. Guildford replied with 182-5.
Former Portsmouth Grammar School captain Ben Caldera (32) played the match winning knock as Chichester Priory Park overhauled Havant’s 125-8 (Pete Hopson 40) to win a low scoring affair by three wickets at the Park.
Fair Oak lost their last five wickets for 14 runs in a bid to chase down Totton & Eling’s 238-8 at Southern Gardens.
Opener Will Hughes (48) and Andy Sturman (58) eased them to 218-5, but the return of Dan Collier (4-38) tipped the scales in Totton’s favour. Sam Gee took 3-20 as Oaks slipped to 232 all out.
Earlier, Oli Perrin (76) and Kumodak Sharma (33) underpinned Totton’s total, which wobbled at 76-4 at one stage, Ross Stewart taking 3-43.
Neil Westhorpe announced his Ventnor return with an unbeaten 79 against newly promoted Hampshire League County Division 2 club Sway at Steephill.
Tom Leon (47) and Hugh Calloway (45) had already underpinned Ventnor’s 237-9, which proved too many for the New Forest visitors, who replied with 187 (Jon Grasham 55)
Spencer le Clerq was man of the match as Hambledon trimmed Sparsholt by eight runs in a close run affair at Ridge Meadow.
He top scored with 58 in Hambledon’s 160-6 and later took 3-36 as Sparsholt, despite being 55-0 at one stage, closed eight runs short at 152-8 (Jeremy Frith 31).
Sam Hillman hit 67 but Waterlooville (192) fell 27 runs adrift of Middleton’s 219-9, of which Sean Heather made 82.
