Jordan Hobday blasted 127 off 91 deliveries to set up an important 86-run victory for Hook & Newnham Basics over Portsmouth – a win which keeps them at arm’s length away from a potentially frenzied survival battle emerging at the foot of Southern Premier League Division 1.
The injury dogged all-rounder smashed three sixes and 18 fours, piloting Hook to 229 all out on Southsea’s sun drenched seafront.
Former Hampshire second team all-rounder Fraser Hay, making his farewell appearance before returning to Western Australia, took 5-49 and later hit 26 as Portsmouth made 143 (Jack Marston 43) in reply.
Spinners Rhodes Franklin (4-39) and Aniket Divecha (3-23) did the damage for Hook, who have hoisted themselves into a comparatively safe mid-table slot.
