Hampshire all-rounder Ian Holland continued his comeback from injury by hitting a century on debut for St Cross Symondians, but narrowly failed in his quest to steer the Winchester club to victory in an ECB Southern Premier League thriller at Bashley (Rydal).
The Australian, who suffered a shoulder injury fielding in Hampshire’s penultimate County Championship match against Essex last September, hit 118 but St Cross finished eight runs short at 232-9 chasing Bashley’s 240 all out.
Holland said: “It was a terrific game which swung back and forth, with Bashley putting some nice partnerships together after being 37-4 and later 114-6.
“But we paid the penalty by bowling 35 wides and in the end it cost us dearly.”
Having bowled 25 or so overs in Hampshire’s Second XI Championship match against Essex II in the days leading up to the game, Holland made his St Cross curtain call simply as a batsman.
Tom Jacques led Bashley’s rescue act with a timely 78, containing a six and ten fours.
Mitch Wilson (28) helped him take Bashley to 198-8 (Harry Foyle 3-45) before Dan Goodey (26) and Brad Currie (13) added a priceless 43 for the last wicket.
Currie (4-35) removed both St Cross openers with only five runs on the board, but with Holland scoring steadily the visitors gradually began to get a foothold back in the game.
Harry Came (26), Matt Stokes (30) and Ed Ellis (19) helped Holland rebuild the innings and at 193-5 a St Cross victory was a distinct possibility.
Holland’s innings, which contained 18 fours, ended (at 210-7) when he was caught off a miscued a shot off Currie.
The St Cross tail added another 22 runs, with Charlie Ayres caught off the last ball of the match, with the visitors 232-9.
