Ben Thane is set to miss Hook & Newnham Basics’ debut season in the ECB Southern Premier Division after snapping his left Achilles in a midweek training session.
The 35-year old all-rounder whose return after two seasons with Basingstoke & North Hants was intended to bolster Hook’s batting explained: “I did it pushing off for a ‘single’ in the nets. It just went ‘bang’ followed by excruciating pain.
“I’ve undergone surgery and now face the next six to eight weeks in a moon boot, after which I’ll have to have loads of physio to learn how to walk again.
“I’m absolutely gutted. Pre-season training back home at Hook was going amazingly well with all the lads really fired up and, despite the bad weather, really looking forward to the start of the season in ten weeks time.”
Due to a separate injury, Thane managed only 11 first team appearances for Basingstoke last summer and now faces an agonising 12 month wait before he can play any active sport again.
