Vice-captain Matt Buckingham and off-spinner Aniket Divecha picked up the principal individual player awards as Hook & Newnham Basics celebrated last year’s ECB Southern Premier League relegation ‘great escape’ at their pre-season presentation dinner.
Buckingham (pictured) made 487 runs and Divecha snapped up 27 wickets for Hook, who escaped relegation in their debut season at the top level by winning four of their last five matches.
Youngsters Tom May (batting) and Liam Shire (bowling) were the second team prize winners – Kevin Light’s side, having been Hampshire League runners-up in 2019, toasting a second consecutive promotion, finishing second to Hambledon in SPL3.
Hook will be looking to put their winter practice into action on Saturday when they begin a three-week series of friendly matches – Basingstoke & North Hants coming to the KGV and Light’s second team travelling to Fareham & Crofton.
HNB will once again rely on home grown talent, with spin all-rounders Liam Doran (Sparsholt) and Rhodes Franklin (Bashley Rydal) returning to the fold.
Pace bowler Max Simpson has joined the Hampshire Academy, but the indications are that, being dual registered, he’ll be ‘loaned back’ to take the new ball for Hook in the Premier League,
Looking ahead to the coming season, Hook’s head of cricket, Vince Gardner said: “The overall message is one of stability and the club not splashing the cash on players.
“It’s going to be another exciting year for the one’s and a really difficult assignment for Kev Light’s young second team, but how well they’ve done in the last two playing seasons ?”
Hartley Wintney have their first warm-up match at home to Liphook & Ripsley on Saturday.
