Hugo Hammond brings up his Hartley century with a drive through the covers [Dave Vokes]
A CENTURY from Hugo Hammond was all in vain as Hartley Wintney were beaten by 59 runs by visiting Waterlooville in the Southern Premier League Division Two.
The visitors’ 264 all out was underpinned by a superb innings from opener Jon Hudson, who hit an unbeaten 124 after Tom Greene was caught behind by Hammond as Hampshire Under-17 prospect Harry Broderick struck early.
Alex Shephard (49) added 125 with Hudson for the second wicket, before Shephard was trapped leg before by Scott Baldwin (2-40). The Ville opener was then joined by Cole Abrahams (43) and they took the score to 195.
The South African was the first of four wickets for Mark Teale (4-31) in a six over spell, as the visitors lost their last seven wickets adding just 69 runs to their total being bowled out for 264.
The Hartley reply did not get off to a good start as skipper Will Kerr was out with just six scored and Indy Chakrabati followed soon after.
Century man Hammond and Jason Knibbs (22) then put on 70 for the third wicket and some more useful partnerships followed.
These were between Hammond and Harry Broderick (9) worth 38, with Scott Baldwin (21) he and Hammond moved the score to 167. Then the opener and Roy Cockram (24) took the score to 184-6.
At this point, Hammond’s fine knock of 101 came to an end and from here the innings fell away as Hartley were bowled out for 205 inside 39 overs, with Max Goddard taking 3-11.
