Former Wales stand-off and Great Britain rugby league scrum-half Jonathan Griffiths is set to don his cricket whites to play in a Memorial Match for Shanklin legend Dave Porter at Westhill next Saturday (September 7), 1pm.
Griffiths grew up in island sport and was a decent top-order left-hand batsman for Shanklin before returning to his native Wales where he became a star for Llanelli, scoring a try in the Welsh Rugby Cup final against Neath at Cardiff before being twice capped by his country. Now aged 54 years, Griffiths went onto play rugby league for St Helen’s and represented Great Britain in the 1995 RL World Cup.
Jonathan is among numerous Shanklin old boys who will return to their Westhill haunts next weekend to pay tribute to Dave Porter, left, who died suddenly last January.
A hard hitting left-hand batsman and spin bowler, Dave was a legend in island sport, spending virtually his entire adult career at Shanklin, who are celebrating promotion from Hampshire League County Division 3 South.
A hugely respected estate agent on the Isle of Wight, Dave represented the island at all age levels and, after hanging up his boots, umpired for Shanklin and drove the mini-bus to away games.
The Dave Porter XI is: David Griffiths, Mark Ringer, James Lucy, Jonathan Griffiths, Simon Mead, Greg Dean, Chris Lammiman, Lawrence Tolfrey, Rob Hall, Andy White, Nick Holland.
