Next Thursday, James Vince will make his Test debut for England against Sri Lanka at Headingley – exactly ten years after making his debut for the Hampshire Academy against South Wilts in an ECB Southern Electric Premier League match on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground.
It’s wasn’t the most triumphant of debuts for the (now) 25-year old Warminster-raised batsman, who was bowled by Adie Holewell (now Amport) for one, having earlier taken a catch to dismiss Army capped Dave Webb (33). South Wilts made 239-8, but lost by five wickets, Kevin Latouf hitting an unbeaten 122 for the then Young Hawks.
So, who played in that match on May 13 2006 ?
Led by Rob Wade, South Wilts included Western Australia’s Chris Wood (son of Test opener Graeme), while in the Academy side were Liam Dawson, Chris Benham, Latouf, and Vince. Eddie Abel was caught napping and run out by Joe Cranch, who made 96* for South Wilts.
Paul Turner and the late Doug Martin officiated, while Kevin Baker and Adrian James took charge of ‘the books’.
Here are the teams –
