Basingstoke & North Hants’ near two-year wait for a Southern Premier League victory is over.
The Bountymen had been waiting since June 20 2019 (when they won by 30 runs at Burridge) to get an entry in the win column – something they achieved with a five-wicket success against Rowledge, which lifted them off the foot of the Division 1 table.
Joe Oates was the toast of May’s Bounty, his unbeaten 65 easing Basingstoke to victory after Rowledge had been pegged to 183-9.
Basingstoke made a hesitant start losing Matt Deadman and Ash Neal before teenager Josh Coombs (21) joined them on the dressing room balcony at 53-3.
But when Brad Neal (37) was joined by Oates, the tide turned as the pair pieced together a 92-run partnership that took Basingstoke to 145-3 and effectively decided the game.
Matt Donaldson’s quick fire 20 proved time for Oates, whose sensible innings eased Basingstoke home with ten balls to spare.
Earlier, teenager Tyler Bradley’s second consecutive three-wicket haul – the youngster has eight victims for 53 runs in his last three seam bowling stints – had Rowledge wobbling at 35-4 (Sam Plater 21).
But fellow teens, Odiham & Greywell raised Zac le Roux (37) and 15-year old Ollie Ryman, left, who clouted two sixes and six fours in his 66, rallied with a stand of 85, which went a long way to providing Rowledge with a competitive total.
