South Wilts left-arm pace bowler Josh Croom has been named ECB Southern Premier League ‘Young Cricketer of the Year’ after his 48-wicket season for the Bemerton club, which also earned him the Premier Division bowling prize.
The 20-year old, who is spending a third successive winter with South Australian Grade club Glenelg in Adelaide, is the fourth South Wilts cricketer in recent seasons to have won the John Millett Trophy, originally awarded to Winchester left-hand batsman/wicketkeeper Neil Moseley back in 1981.
Team-mates Tom Morton (2006) and James Hayward (2007) won the award in consecutive seasons, while Luke Evans was Young Cricketer more recently in 2018.
Speaking from Adelaide, Croom said: “It’s a great honour to be named SPL Young Player. I would probably have laughed if someone said back in early May, I’d take 48 league wickets.”
Croom’s 48-wicket haul is the second highest behind James Hibberd, who took 57 poles for South Wilts in 2008.
“Hibby certainly seemed more worried about his record than I was. At least he’s getting a good night’s sleep now.”
