Oli Southon had done the hard yards, batting patiently to steer Burridge from what seemed an inevitable defeat by Alton to within eight runs of victory.
But with seven balls of a rain trimmed 47-over affair remaining and Burridge 132-9 in response to Alton’s 144 all out, he played an over-ambitious ramp shot and became the tenth player on either side to be bowled.
Alton were elated. The narrow victory they pulled off was only their second in seven outings and lifted them off the foot of the ECB Southern Premier Division, six points above Hook & Newnham Basics.
In all, 13 of the 20 dismissals were bowled or (three) leg before wicket. Only one batsman on either side managed to score more than 20. It was a day for the bowlers, none more so than Alton’s Eastern Province seamer Bash Walters, whose flowing action caught the eye.
Alton were 48-5 when Scott Myers (48) got a grip of the situation but, while Duncan Fraser (3-36) and latterly Southon (4-30) made inroads, he and Walters added a vital 32 to raise the Brewers score to 144, Julian Ballinger and Jack Myers adding precious runs for the last wicket.
Set 140 in 47 overs, Burridge plunged to 89-8 against Walters (4-22), Myers (2-28) and Ballinger (1-25).
Alton were in the ascendency, but ninth-wicket pair Southon and Sully White added another 40 before the latter was bowled to leave Burridge 129-9, 11 runs short of the target.
Seven balls from the end Southon (34), having batted sensibly for an hour, had a rush of blood to the head and, trying to play a risky ramp shot, was bowled by Abhay Gonella. Burridge 132 all out. Alton win by eight runs.
