SOUTHERN Premier League Division One champions Hook and Newnham Basics signed off their title winning campaign, with their 14th win out of 16 – their 17-run victory sentencing Old Tauntonians & Romsey to the second relegation spot alongside Ventnor.
Openers Harry Robson (13) and Daniel Moore (33) put on 33 after which the Hook innings was underpinned by a fine half century from Richard Willcock (51), who arrived at the crease with the score on 53 and departed when it was 166-8.
He shared a couple of handy partnerships with Josh Buckingham (20) and Rhodes Franklin (14) before Anik Divecha hit an unbeaten 15 as Hook finished on 192-9, spinner Rob Newman (4-34) and teenage left-armer James Trodd (3-34) taking seven of the wickets.
OTs reply got off to the worst possible start, as Joseph Vaughan was bowled first ball by Jack Murrell, pictured left.. Lanky left-armer Liam Shore (2-34) then removed Iain Woodhall, before Murrell struck twice more as the Romsey hosts found themselves 33-4. But when Charlie King (43) and Harry Tulk (59) added 104 for the fifth wicket to take the score to 137, OTs looked as though they might pull off an unexpected victory. But a great run out by Divecha removed captain King to swing the game back in Hook’s favour.
Opening bowlers Murrell and Shore returned and with it went the home side’s chances of victory. Shore took one wicket and Murrell three more to take his tally to 6-40 for the game, his best return of the season since joining the newly crowned champions from Paultons.
It was left to Ollie May to finish off the job with Buckingham snapping up his fourth catch of the game (and take his season’s tally to 27) as Hook finished their superb season in fine fashion.
