Sarisbury Athletic gave their British Gas Southern League Division 1 survival prospects a boost when Joe Lovett’s last ball run out secured a two-run win over fellow strugglers Ventnor at Newclose.
Chasing down Sarisbury’s 238, Ventnor tail ender George Willis needed to hit a boundary off the last ball, but was run out to leave the islanders two runs short at 236 all out.
Sarisbury recovered from the early loss of skipper Matt Journeaux to post a competitive total – Sam Floyd (26) providing a base for Josh Hill (34) and Tom Mills (43) to take the mainland side to 110-2.
Chris Sanders (40), Jordan Wright (25) and Lovett (24) took Sarisbury on to 238, while Zeph Wells and Hugh Calloway shared six of the wickets.
A three-wicket new-ball spell by Chris Sanders (3-31), which included the wicket of South African Schaughan van Greunen, left Ventnor rocking at 31-3.
At 122-6 (Neil Westhorpe 46) they appeared out of the contest, but Calloway (68) and Ben Woodhouse (24) turned the ride.
Calloway took Ventnor’s reply to 231-9 (Sam Hill 3-33), but both he and Willis were Joe Lovett victims as two late wickets saw the island side finish two short at 236 all out.
Tichborne Park remain locked to the SPL1 basement despite a nine-run victory over Rowledge in a cellar-dweller affair outside Alresford.
The Rowledge attack came under fire as first Henry Don (41) and then Martin Cheyney (100) and Hector Don (91) blitzed seven sixes and 28 fours.
The latter added 173 for the second wicket and take Tichborne to an imposing 271-5.
Spinner Ed Berry (4-46) reduced Rowledge to 71-4 before David Lloyd (92) and Ricky Yates (65) hit back to lift the visitors’ reply to 232-5.
In the end, Rowledge found the target too great and closed 262-9, ready to potentially fight for their immediate SPL1 futures against Ventnor at Church Road on Saturday.
