Liphook & Ripsley are through to the National Village Cup quarter-finals after a creditable 71-run win over Oxford Downs, the unbeaten Cherwell & District League leaders, at Ripsley Park.
Their reward is an away trip to Crewkerne-based North Perrott, third placed in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League, at Willis Lane on Sunday week, July 22.
All-rounder Suman Ganguly held the key to Liphook posting 238, a total which looked improbable after Jonny Law took two early wickets to have the hosts wobbling at 15-2.
Hitting two sixes and 13 fours in his 87, Ganguly shared a 103-run stand with opener Ryan Covey (39) and 51 with Grant Rouse, who cracked a lively 66 including three maximums and ten fours, his hooking and quick singles catching the eye.
Liphook went on to lose their last five wickets for 19 runs, but after a miserly start by Cover and Sean Burton, 238 was always going to be a tough target for Oxford Downs to match.
Eight miserly overs by the pair tied the Oxford Downs batsmen to the crease, with spinners Harry Munt and Dave Elliott taking advantage with three wickets each. By the time Elliott had Downs skipper James Ellwood (43) caught behind, the game was as good as settled. Oxford Downs were 167 all out.
Rowledge won’t be joining Liphook on the road to Lord’s after a disappointing 21-run defeat by Sussex League Division 2 side Mayfield, who posted a challenging 151.
Robert Sharma, who had a major influence on the outcome with 48 and a 4-15 return with his seamers, top scored in the tie, with Ollie Baker (4-20) an emerging talent for Rowledge.
The hosts got to 45-2 before losing five wickets for 15 runs and the match with it, the question of whether ‘neutral’ panel umpires should be appointed at the ‘round of 16’ stage (read between the lines on this one) being raised during the later afternoon session.
Sam Moseley (29) and Max Martin (27 not out) lifted Rowledge spirits in a late rally, but the Surrey village champions were eventually dismissed for 130.
Mayfield face a last eight trip to Suffolk League leaders Worlington, near Bury St Edmunds.
