Little George Metzger showed remarkable powers of concentration as he struck a best-yet 194 in Hampshire Under-17s’ run strewn three-day ECB Age Group County Championship match against Worcestershire at Stourbridge.
The Basingstoke & North Hants talent, who joined the Hampshire Academy this season, kept wicket throughout the second day as Worcestershire scored a towering 492 to take a 105-run first innings lead.
Metzger then swapped his keeping pads for his bat to hit a remarkable 194 (32 fours) to stave off any threat of Hampshire suffering a two-innings defeat.
They were wobbling at 111-4, but Metzger found reliable partners in Alton’s Abhay Gonella and Jake Nichols, who each made 68 as Hampshire closed 381-9.
“George has batted really well over the past month so he was confident something was on the horizon,” praised Hampshire U17 coach James Tomlinson.
“It was a phenomenal effort considering he had kept wicket in the heat throughout the previous day. It was a fantastic innings, complimented by two great catches behind the stumps too.”
Scores:
Hampshire 387 (Ollie Southon 80, Abhay Gonella 56, Cole Campbell 73, Tom Prest 68, Ed Bragg 6-21)
Worcestershire 492 (Clarke 108, Jake Nichol 3-22)
