Basement side Hartley Wintney, who are all but mathematically relegated from Southern Premier League Division 1, pulled off an amazing 32-run win over Liphook & Ripsley, who could go to Lord’s for next month’s Village Cup final demoted themselves.
They need big wins over Ventnor and Portsmouth in their last two games to stay up.
Liphook looked to have the win points in the bag when Ryan Covey (3-41) and Suman Ganguly (2-38) reduced HW to 68-5.
But Ben Hyde (98) and Will Kerr (77) turned the game on its head with a sixth-wicket stand of 135 which, with the aid of a handy 43 not out from Jamie Teale, saw Hartley to 310-7.
Sides have not been safe with 300-plus totals on the board at Hartley in recent weeks, so when Ganguly and Ron Nicklin (37) took Liphook’s reply to 119-2 the game was in the balance.
Young Australian Ben Earney (4-37) saw four Liphook wickets, including that of Ganguly (75), for 25 runs, leaving the visitors’ 156-6.  But Chris Martin (57) and Jon Pryce (44) rallied before Liphook’s response ended at 278.
